Mark Lawson is a native of Knutsford, Cheshire, UK and moved to Spain in 1965 when his parents built their own beach-side hotel project. Educated in Spain and in the UK he aimed for property development as a career, and now, with more than 27 years of international property development experience behind him, Mark has gained considerable professional expertise and track record in the areas of project management and resort development.
The ability to apply this expertise and leadership cross-culturally is Mark's key ability and has enabled him to maximise the potential of each and every one of the projects he has been involved with.
Mark's early career, working for Sunley Holdings PLC, then one of the largest International construction companies in the UK, provided him with a clear understanding of a developer's ultimate objectives. As Development Director for US owned Global Group, he delivered to targets two fully functioning Vacation Resorts, on time and on budgets. Then, as Project Director of Resort Design and Construction in Europe for Marriott Vacation Club International, he made his name with the first of many prominent projects: the award-winning Marriott's Marbella Beach Resort. To follow were several other high-grade projects in Europe (Disneyland Paris and Mallorca and Estepona) for a division of this internationally renowned hotel and hospitality chain.
MDCI Project Managers
In 1999, during his successful Marriott years and recognising a gap in the market, Mark founded MDCI Project Managers, now the most widely respected project management and development services company in Southern Spain.
Specialising in Mixed-Use Projects, hotels, resorts and luxury villas, MDCI have delivered over 7,500 residential units on 60+ different projects, with a total value of more than €980m, 55% delivered under budget (savings achieved of €80m), delivered on time and to full client satisfaction.
In 2006 he obtained ISO 9001 certification for project development process - only one of 4 other companies to have achieved this in Spain.
Key to Mark's success is his application of northern European and American work ethics to Hispanic and international business practices. Having many foreign investors, developers and banks as clients, Mark's natural understanding of their requirements and his ability to guide them through the intricacies with an integrated process and clear methodologies has proved enormously valuable and sets him aside from his competitors.
In addition to his multilingual team of professionals, Mark himself is completely adapted to the Spanish work environment and is a fluent Spanish speaker and writer. Indeed, he is a regular contributor to various industry publications and is often called upon to give speeches and presentations at professional forums within the industry. Mark also lectures at business schools in Malaga and Seville as part of their Project Management faculties and holds a Master´s Degree in Project Development.
He is a member of several professional organisations: a Fellow of RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) and sits on the Board, AECMA (Spanish Association of Project Management for Professionals) as Founder and Board member, through which he participates and promotes raising the profile of the Spanish construction industry and improving efficiency, standards and methodologies.
Currently engaged in leading and developing sizeable projects in Spain and Portugal, Mark is accustomed to foreign assignments which he loves, given the opportunities to contribute with his wide knowledge and experience.
